Unlike other chronic diseases, substance use disorders (SUD) are often seen as a moral failing. This stigma deeply impacts everyone including individuals, families, and communities. It also presents major barriers to ensure access to life-saving overdose prevention services and treatment. On December 11, 2024 from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm PT, we heard from Leslie Alfaro, the National Stigma Initiative Program Manager at Shatterproof. Leslie the real-world impact of stigma through data findings from Shatterproof’s recent nationwide survey on addiction stigma, the largest survey on attitudes towards SUD. Participants also learned practical steps they can take to help identify and combat stigma in their organizations and communities. Data can help power local-level work to combat overdose. With data, we can raise awareness, tailor interventions, encourage policy support, and gain vital intelligence on the nature of the local overdose problem. The Spring 2023 COPN Convening will be a data summit on ways you can harness data to help achieve your aims.

The COPN Data Summit will feature key data sources and platforms needed for local decision-making; success stories from communities across California who will share how they’re leveraging data; a conversation about equity considerations with overdose data; and small-group breakout discussions on creating your own community surveys, forming strong and sustainable data partnerships, and ideas for new data systems to strengthen overdose prevention activities in California.

The COPN Data Summit promises to be a lively exchange of ideas for how we can all better marshal data to support our local work to combat overdose.

Communities across California developed innovative strategies over the past year. In this webinar you will hear from local overdose prevention coalitions who utilized local data to develop innovative interventions focused on youth engagement and harm reduction in their communities. These coalitions will share their process and implementation of their interventions.

After years of litigation, several major opioid settlement agreements are being finalized with states and communities across the country. Overdose coalitions across California are harnessing wide-ranging data related to overdose, not only to inform coalition decision-making but also to help make a persuasive case to audiences they need to reach, such as schools, parents, elected officials, and health care providers. 

During this webinar, we’ll take a look at the presentations, fact sheets, and data stories that coalitions have built to educate community members about overdose and to advocate for supportive policies. The session will be led by Andy Krackov. Through his data storytelling consultancy, Hillcrest Advisory, Andy has worked with more than a dozen coalitions affiliated with COPN. Andy will share his top five tips regarding communicating overdose data and spotlight COPN’s recently launched measurement guide, which is targeted toward the needs of coalitions statewide.

This webinar will feature how to communicate data in cogent, engaging, and persuasive ways. Andy and Sarah will share lessons learned in data storytelling, and demo two new presentation templates –a dashboard and a fact sheet –that any coalition in California can use for their work.

In the summer of 2020, data storyteller Andy Krackov and epidemiologist Sarah Marikos worked closely with a number of coalitions in the COPN network to help them find, analyze, and communicate local data related to substance use. Based on this experience, Sarah and Andy, along with CHLP staff, developed a comprehensive COPN Measurement Guide. This guide offers practical advice on leveraging data through use cases, worksheets, and includes links to numerous resources. During part I of this two-part series, Sarah and Andy will share lessons learned in data storytelling and unveil the COPN Measurement Guide that any coalition in California can use for their work.
