Navigating addiction treatment can be confusing, discouraging, and frustrating for individuals seeking help and for the families and communities who support them. Although effective treatments exist, including life-saving medications like buprenorphine (Suboxone), many people never receive care, struggle to stay engaged, or encounter stigma and misinformation that block their path to recovery. This workshop will offer a deeper dive into the concepts presented during the NOPN webinar, The Path to Recovery: Understanding the Ups and Downs of Addiction Treatment. During the workshop, participants will discuss how stigma and misinformation create barriers to care in their community and what providers, advocates, and community members can do to expand access, reduce harm, and create more compassionate pathways to recovery. Participants will leave with practical insights and next steps they can take to support individuals and families affected by substance use disorder.

The Spring 2023 COPN Convening will be a data summit on ways you can harness data to help achieve your aims.

The COPN Data Summit will feature key data sources and platforms needed for local decision-making; success stories from communities across California who will share how they’re leveraging data; a conversation about equity considerations with overdose data; and small-group breakout discussions on creating your own community surveys, forming strong and sustainable data partnerships, and ideas for new data systems to strengthen overdose prevention activities in California.

The COPN Data Summit promises to be a lively exchange of ideas for how we can all better marshal data to support our local work to combat overdose.

Join us for the second session of our COPN webinar series on youth overdose prevention. This session will focus on opportunities for substance use prevention, treatment and harm reduction with teens and adolescents.

Participants will hear from leaders of the California Youth Opioid Response (YOR California) who will provide an overview of the current landscape of prevention, treatment and recovery services for teens. The session will also feature on-the-ground strategies, policies and practices being used in Marin County including a youth prevention and harm reduction curriculum and Narcan distribution in schools. Finally, a representative from the Youth Peer Mentor Program (YPMP) will talk about prevention and treatment groups for transitional age youth in and out of custody. There are currently 65 syringe services programs (SSPs) operating in 33 counties across California that collectively serve more than 100,000 people each year. Overdose coalitions across California are harnessing wide-ranging data related to overdose, not only to inform coalition decision-making but also to help make a persuasive case to audiences they need to reach, such as schools, parents, elected officials, and health care providers. 

During this webinar, we’ll take a look at the presentations, fact sheets, and data stories that coalitions have built to educate community members about overdose and to advocate for supportive policies. The session will be led by Andy Krackov. Through his data storytelling consultancy, Hillcrest Advisory, Andy has worked with more than a dozen coalitions affiliated with COPN. Andy will share his top five tips regarding communicating overdose data and spotlight COPN’s recently launched measurement guide, which is targeted toward the needs of coalitions statewide.

Local coalitions and organizations working in overdose prevention are impacted by ongoing naloxone shortages. Join us for an informative session led by Matt Curtis, a Harm Reduction Specialist at the California Department of Public Health. The session will cover why there have been supply shortages, how the state is working to address the issue, and updates on availability of injectable naloxone.

On July 16, a new national hotline will be in place to help respond to mental health emergencies. Rather than calling 911, people can dial 988 to connect directly to a crisis counselor. But are we prepared? In California, efforts are being made to strengthen regional dispatching units who will answer and respond, and communities are having conversations about activating direct responses including mobile mental health units. This webinar will focus on identifying opportunities to align your work with the implementation of 988, and how to educate your community as an outreach strategy for overdose prevention.

The past few years have seen increases in displacement and crisis related to disasters in California. Wild fires, heat waves, imminent flooding – all connected to the climate crisis – will disproportionately impact some communities more than others; including communities of color and those living in poverty. This conversation will examine how climate change can impact a community’s mental health and will explore strategies for supporting community resilience during this critical time our state.

Learn how one California community built a custom app to increase access to naloxone! The San Luis Obispo Opioid (SLO) Safety Coalition, collaborated with the Cal Poly Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub) and a team of university students to develop Naloxone Now! Using Naloxone Now online or through the app on a phone, SLO community members can find the nearest location to get naloxone or have it delivered at no cost. Join us in conversation with Jenn Rhoads, SLO Opioid Safety Coalition Coordinator to discuss the Naloxone Now app for other communities looking to develop a similar innovation.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) have a proven connection to long term health and well-being and have been a focus in California for a long time. However, there are also “second ACEs”, or Adverse Community Experiences/Environments, that exacerbate the traumatic stress response among children. This webinar will explore how COVID has impacted both types of ACEs, the implications for our work in overdose prevention, and some strategies to consider to help support children and youth moving forward.
